WPES Choir performs at Cherryvale Mall

November, 2010

During the month of October WPES collected items for the 101st Airborne stationed in the Arghandab valley in Afghanistan. WPES kicked off a Hero theme where students are learning about real heroes and recognizing local and distant people. Captain Andy Mark is the nephew of one of the WPES librarians, Melissa Atkins. Mrs. Atkins helped organize this school wide effort for Captain Mark and his unit who have been stationed in Afghanistan since June. Students collected food items, drink mixes, dvd's, cd's, stationery, magazines, iTunes cards and cell phone cards, toiletries, and puzzle books. Captain Mark wrote to the students that his unit is "already getting excited about receiving packages as we are living on next to nothing here!" He wrote that once he receives the packages he will distribute them to all of their tiny combat outposts around the Arghandab area.

Over 40 boxes of items were collected! Some students took the project to heart by bringing in some special items. One student brought in a deflated football with a heartfelt message written on it in marker. Another student brought in one of her prized possessions from home. And other students spent their own money on items for the collection.

Mrs. Ball's 4th grade class collected the most items in the whole school!

Fun Run!

October 1, 2010

On Friday, October 1st the Rockton School District PTO held their annual Fun Run at all three schools. The PTO would like to thank all of the community business partners that helped make the day a great success. Wal-Mart supplied water bottles and popsicles for all three schools and J.D. Mason of Delta Disc Jockeys kept everyone entertained all day with music and games. Other community sponsors include Kohl's, NorthPointe Wellness Center, Badger Pro Construction, SAL Plumbing and Today's Dental.

If each school meets their goal the students will get to see their Principals and several teachers sumo wrestle at an upcoming assembly!

Pacesetter Race

136 students and approximately 12 staff members completed the 1.5 mile cross country course.  Overall winner was 4th grader Kameron Kolberg!  Kameron set a new school record, finishing the race in 9:15 sec. The top girl runner was 5th grader Erin Mercer with a time of 10:31 sec. Officer Cure assisted as our starter and helped record times at the finish line.  Students received invitations based on their scores from their second round of fitness testing held in February. The top '3' boys and girls from each class received an invitation to the race. Additionally, students were able to earn a spot in the race, if they completed '30' miles of walking/jogging/running on the WP fitness path.

The grounds around the Rockton School District’s elementary buildings are looking a bit spiffier these days thanks to the senior class at Hononegah High School.  Accepting the challenge from Principal Ehren Jarrett, 65 members of the senior class converged on the school grounds during senior week to help spruce up the courtyard and recreational areas.  “I posed the challenge to the group to do a community service project,” said Jarrett, “and they embraced it and exceeded all my expectations.”

HHS senior Vince Guzzetta says the students have been organizing the community service project since the beginning of the year.  “It was really just a good opportunity to give back to our community and start a neat tradition,” he says.  “It felt good to be a part of something new and helpful and it was uplifting to see the excitement on the kids faces when they saw the work we did.”

Some students cleaned up the Rockton Grade School courtyard and planted and mulched.  Other students painted four squares in play areas of Whitman Post Elementary School.  Still others visited Highview in the Woodlands to fill planters and do arts and crafts with the residents.  “I’m so proud of what they’ve accomplished,” adds Jarrett.

Superintendent Randy Gross was on site to witness the students in action.  “It was nice to see them give back to their community for the excellent education they received not only at the high school but the elementary level as well.”

Principal Barb Browning was amazed at the impact of the seniors’ hard work at RGS.  “The Hononegah students literally transformed our courtyard from a weedy eye sore to a beautiful retreat,” she exclaimed.  “They were so respectful of the school and the children while they were here, and worked very well together to complete a task they and their teachers should be proud of!  Their work has definitely made a difference at RGS.”

WPES Principal Scott Rollinson was impressed with the amount of planning and effort by the seniors.  “Even though it rained and we had to change some of the original plans, the students did a wonderful job cleaning up the RGS garden, planting new flowers and plants, and painting 4-squares at WPES,” he says.  “Students here started playing with the 4-squares the very next day.”

Reward Day

April 13, 2010

Over 250 students at WPES participated in a rewards day after school on April 13th. A whiffle ball "tournament" and hotdog feast was held for all students who met their academic responsibilities and behavioral criteria for the third quarter. WP teachers and staff were on hand to help with the activities. The Hononegah High School girls varsity softball team, coached by third grade teacher, Lisa Larson, lent their talents to help with all the whiffle ball teams. Three of their volunteer coaches, Kurt Head, Drew Ibendahl and Jessica Levan, also joined the team to help.

Jump Rope for Heart

March 2010

For the third year in a row students at Rockton Grade School and Whitman Post Elementary School exceeded all expectations in their Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. This year, in a troubled economy, the schools had over 360 “Heart Heroes” who managed to raise $17,766!  This was a new record for the number of students that collected donations and the second highest amount collected since WPES opened its doors in 1995!

Our kids never cease to amaze me,” says Mark Donaldson, WPES PE and Health teacher.  “Given the state of the economy, this is truly an outstanding achievement by the students!  There is nothing more important than helping others and our students took this notion to 'HEART' and proved themselves worthy of being called ‘Heart Heroes’!”

For this campaign, students collected pledges from family, friends and other community members in return for their participation in a jump rope “marathon”.  When asked how the students continue to collect so much each year for this cause, they answer that they hope this is the last year they will have to do it because they hope the AHA will find a cure.

Mrs. Stiffler's third grade class, with PE teachers Mrs. Leppert and Mr. Donaldson, collected the highest amount at WPES.
Front row, center - fourth grader Chris Wagoner was the school's top fundraiser, collecting $310!

Valentines for Vets

February 2010

Mrs. Newman's fifth grade class at Whitman Post Elementary School collected 400 special hand made Valentines from students at school. These Valentines were sent to United States Veterans in all parts of the country. "Students wanted to express their thanks to the men and women who served their country with honor," explained Newman. This is the seventh year that her class has done this activity.

Pennies for Patients

January 2010

The students and staff at Whitman Post collected spare change and other donations to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program.

A school goal of $500 was set, and within just four days, over $1,000 was raised! At the conclusion of the two weeks fund raising project, WPES collected a total of $2,228.02! "The generosity of the children and parents of the Rockton School District never ceases to amaze me," says WP Principal, Scott Rollinson. "I couldn’t have been more proud to send in such a large donation on behalf of our students!"

Thank you to all who donated and a special thank you to Taylor Frommer from Mrs. Schamell’s class and Maiya Johnson from Ms. Larson’s class who each brought in over $100 in change! The class who earned a pizza party for being the top fundraising class was Mrs. Schamell’s 3rd grade class who raised $343.58!  Their class "theme" was "You can count on us!"

Way to make a difference WPES students!

DARE graduation

On December 15th, 180 fifth grade students at WPES walked across the stage at Hononegah's Performing Arts Center for their DARE graduation. Penny Cure, Rockton police officer and Rockton School District's Resource Officer, teaches the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. She has spent the first semester teaching the students the anti-drug and how-to-handle-peer-pressure program which culminated in the fifth graders making their commitment to staying drug free in front of cheering parents, friends and staff at the graduation ceremony.

Rockton Police Chief Steve Dickson was on stage and thanked the corporate sponsors, school and community for its support. WPES Principal, Scott Rollinson, commented that "Officer Cure does a fantastic job every single year. The students learn a lot about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and how to make good choices."

WPES 4th and 5th grade Choir Field Trip

The fourth and fifth graders in the WPES Choir performed at Cherryvale Mall on December 3rd. WPES music teacher, Zach Newman, brought 106 students to the mall to sing traditional and new Christmas songs for parents and shoppers. They sang for a full hour and were very entertaining. "They sang wonderfully, and represented their school incredibly well," said Newman.

Rotary Club gives out hundreds of dictionaries!

Third graders in the Rockton, Roscoe and South Beloit school districts are now the proud owners of a prized reference tool, thanks to the generosity of the Northern Winnebago Rotary Club.  Rotary Club officials presented more than 600 dictionaries to area third graders in October, marking the sixth straight year of “vocabulary support” by the local fraternal organization.

Ted Rehl, president of the local Rotary Club, says his organization believes a child cannot do his or her best work without a dictionary, and that children deserve the best teachers and resources.   Thus, the Rotary’s DICTIONARY PROJECT is designed to aid third grade teachers in their goal to see all their students leave at the end of the year as good writers, active readers, and creative thinkers.

“Our purpose is to provide third grade students in the community with their own personal dictionary,” explains Rehl. “It is for the children to keep, so they can take it with them into the fourth grade and use it throughout their school career.”

Rockton School District third grade teacher Jane Schamell says the students “love the dictionaries.  We spent 30 minutes just looking through them and finding words.”  Rockton third grader Brandon Miller says he expects to put his new reference book to use often.  "It's useful because if you don't know what a word means, there are tons of words in our new dictionary!" he exclaims.

WPES holds 1 1/2 mile race!

May 20, 2009

WPES held their first one and a half mile race for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on May 20th. The event was by invitation only, based on performance levels during annual fitness testing, and also included several teachers and WPES Principal and Assistant Principal. The event was intended to promote physical activity and hopefully create interest in the track program at SMMS.  The race had 81 participants, many of which this was their first attempt at a race covering 1.5 miles.  Discovering that they could do it already has them talking about next year and wanting to race more! The school concluded the event with the presentation of trophies and medals for top boy and girl finishers in each grade.  A large number of staff, i.e., teachers, aides, administrators, maintenance, and Rockton School District police liaison, Penny Cure, volunteered their time to make this event possible.

      WPES Mock Election

        October 30, 2008

Rockton Schools predict our next President!

Every four years The League of Women Voters holds a Nationwide Mock Student Election.  This is an exciting opportunity for our students to experience the ‘privilege of democracy – voting’.  The results of this student election are tallied nationwide and this year, as in the past, student election results have been good predictors of the presidential election.

At Rockton Grade School there were many activities to guide the students through the election process.  Teachers read stories, compared the two candidates, had the principal speak about what a principal does, compared the similarities between a principal and a president, and even wrote papers and created books.  Some of the students participated in a “candy bar vote” before the mock election in order to receive their voter registration cards.  Second grade students were assigned the topic “If I were President”.  Here are some examples of the responses from Mrs. Guerrero and Mr. Carlson’s classes:

  • I would change a lot of things.  Some days are boring.  I would change it.
  • I would make a law that said each month on the 15th there would be a holiday.
  • I would stop crimes so people would be safe.
  • I would make a day called Family Day.  Lots of children would probably like that.  You would go rent a movie and cuddle with your family.
  • I would make a law about no littering in lakes.  It could kill lots of water animals.
  • I would make more doctors.
  • Everyone would be in shelter during the winter.
  • I would help kids by putting as playground in every town.
  • It is hard work to make the world safe and better but if I were President I would do it!
  • As President I would make sure everyone liked what I did.

At WPES, who has participated in this mock election in the past, they study the voting process and involve the 5th graders in every step of the process from promoting the event, running the event on Election Day, and counting the ballots afterwards.

At RGS, Obama won the election by receiving 60% of the total votes.  AT WPES, the margin was a little less with Obama winning with 55% of the votes.  The results were sent into the League of Women Voters for the state and national count.
