                                          What is Student Council?

Student Council is a service organization.  Its purpose is to provide a means of creating better fellowship and understanding between faculty, student body, and the students themselves; promote the general welfare of the student body; represent the student body and foster a better relationship between home, school, and the community through activities.

Student Council News

Thanks to the determined efforts of a caring Student Council, students with special needs at Stephen Mack Middle School are truly getting into the ‘swing’ of the new school year. New playground equipment installed at SMMS over the summer included special equipment and surfaces that make the recreational area accessible to all – including students in the Satellite program.

This student-led initiative grew out of a need to provide such an outdoor recreational area for the students to use during "recess" and lunch times. Although intended to benefit all students, the Council recognized that the students with special needs would be left out with the installation of a traditional playground set. And so the students made it their mission to ensure that the facilities included equipment for their classmates with special needs.

Once they "got their arms around the idea" it was full steam ahead, according to Sarah Kazluski, Student Council advisor. Student council representatives and several teachers addressed the Rockton School District Board of Education with their concerns about the playground last spring. As part of their presentation, the students showed Board members drawings of their vision for the recreational area.

With the support of the Rockton School District PTO and the Board, the project became a reality. They made sure the equipment included wheelchair accessible swings and the surface was safe for all children.

The tremendous results of the combined efforts of the Student Council, teachers, PTO and the Board are visible to anyone who drives by Stephen Mack during the school day: the swings have been crowded with students since the first day of school.
