Message from the Rockton School District Board of Education:

The BOE is well aware of the need to find a way to lower our expenses, but we desire to do so in a way that still allows us to continue to provide the best possible education for our students.  So the BOE asked for the formation of a Financial Task Force.

This Task Force - comprised of Administrators, Educators, Staff and Community Members - completed a two-month study of the current budget deficit and developed a series of recommendations for the Board of Education to consider as it creates the 2012-2013 budget. Anticipating continued reductions in revenue - thanks to significant cuts in state aid and reduced local property taxes, among other things - the district has forecasted a budget deficit of $1.4M, or about 10% of the total budget, without significant cuts in expenses in all areas. The Task Force recommendations included reduction in personnel costs - administrative, educational and staff - as well as facility maintenance costs and transportation costs. The ultimate goal is to achieve a balanced budget while continuing to adhere to our mission: "to provide excellence in education with support from our community."  Concerned community members can learn more about the Task Force recommendations by contacting the District Office.

Local Rotary Club gives out hundreds of dictionaries!

Thanks to the Northern Winnebago County Rotary Club, 156 Rockton third graders now have at their fingertips definitions to 37,000 words and phrases.  The Rotary Club presented each student with a new Webster’s Dictionary last Friday at Whitman Post Elementary School.

The dictionary serves as a multi-functional tool for the students, as it includes historical facts, a list of the U.S. presidents, and world maps that can be used throughout their years in the Rockton schools.  This is the eighth year that the local Rotary has been providing dictionaries to students.

Literacy is a goal of Rotary International, the parent organization of the local chapter, according to Ted Rehl, who represented the local Rotary chapter for the presentation of the dictionaries.  “It gives our local Rotary an opportunity to contribute to a major goal on an individual level by giving each student the dictionary,” he explains.

Rehl was joined by Brenda Warren, President of Rockton Board of Education and also a member of the Rotary; Mike Greenlee, RSD Superintendent; Scott Rollinson, WPES Principal, and David Tucker, also representing the Rotary Club.

"The students are always so excited to receive the dictionaries,” says third grade teacher Jane Schamell.  “We usually spend time just exploring them."

The Rockton program is part of a broader distribution of a total of 570 dictionaries to students in the Northern Illinois region, including those in the South Beloit, Prairie Hill and Kinnikinnick school districts, as well as St. Peter’s Catholic School in South Beloit.

According to the Rotary International mission statement, the goal of its Dictionary Project is “to aid third grade teachers in their goal to see all of their students leave at the end of the year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers. “  The Rotary organization believes a child cannot do his or her best work without a dictionary, and that children deserve the best teachers and resources.

Posting pictures and video on Facebook or Youtube

Please remember that while you may have some great footage of your child from a school event that you can’t wait to share with family and friends on Facebook, you need to be very careful.  Please remember that other children may be in the pictures too, and their parents may prefer their images be kept private.  Many social networking sites have privacy settings – please consider their use.
